As the Codrington MYP5 Class of 2028 we initiated a project focusing on identifying and describing the flora present on the Codrington School campus. The initiative began as a result of our unit “Botanical Breakthrough”, within which we cultivated our knowledge of flowering plants. The project was a product of utilising our knowledge in an interactive and engaging way, allowing us to have field experience in a controlled environment. As a result of the initiative, we were able to create a webpage and map showcasing the knowledge that we gained.

When initiating the project, we split into groups of two to three helping us to divide the map and lessen the work load. In these groups, we were assigned a quadrant of the campus, and conducted hands-on research of the different plant species that we identified using a mobile application by the name of Flora Incognita. The app functions by identifying plant species through a photo, based on its vast database, along with a percentage describing how accurate its suggestion might be. It then provides key information relevant to that species of plant that we could later use for our map and descriptions. This helped with our understanding of biodiversity on the Codrington campus and how our school relates to the general ecology of the island.
